This is a nest of bald-faced hornets, a very dangerous lot, that we had to have exterminated.  There are hundreds of them inside this giant nest, dead, thank God.  It was hanging in the maple tree right above my driveway. These things will chase you for a mile if you upset them and can put you in the hospital.
